Helping your child conquer maths anxiety

Maths fear is learned, and it can be unlearned. Small changes at home can turn dread into quiet confidence.

Few subjects trigger as much worry as Mathematics. But maths anxiety is not a fixed trait - it is a habit of thinking that can be reshaped with patience and the right support.

Praise effort, not just answers

When a child believes maths ability is something you are either born with or not, one bad test confirms the worst. Praising effort and strategy teaches them that maths is learned through practice, mistakes included.

Make it concrete

Abstract symbols feel scary. Tie maths to real life - splitting a bill, measuring for a recipe, working out data on a phone plan. Meaning makes the numbers less intimidating.

Fill the gaps early

Maths builds on itself, so a shaky foundation makes everything after it harder. A tutor can find and repair the specific gap holding your child back, often faster than you would expect.

Keep it calm

Your own attitude rubs off. Staying relaxed and curious about maths, rather than anxious, gives your child permission to do the same.
