Beating exam anxiety: calm strategies that actually work

Nerves before an exam are normal. These practical techniques help learners stay calm and think clearly when it counts.

A racing heart and a blank mind in the exam hall can undo weeks of preparation. Exam anxiety is common, and the good news is that it responds well to a few simple, practised techniques.

Prepare so you trust yourself

The surest antidote to nerves is genuine readiness. Working through past papers under timed conditions means the real exam feels familiar rather than frightening.

Breathe to reset

When panic rises, slow breathing calms the body. Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, out for four. A minute of this settles the racing heart and clears the mind.

Have a plan for the paper

Read the whole paper first, start with a question you know well to build confidence, and keep an eye on the clock. Momentum beats perfection.

Look after the basics

Sleep, food and movement matter more than one extra hour of cramming. A rested brain recalls more. If anxiety is severe, a tutor or school counsellor can help build coping strategies well before the exam.
